White Sands National Monument
Hike the White Sands National Monument
This is a can't-miss attraction in New Mexico. White Sands National Monument is comprised of 275 miles of fine white sand near Alamogordo. The wind-swept gypsum dune field is the largest in the world.
The area has been protected since 1933, when it was declared a national monument. Explore the dunes on the marked hiking trails or bring along a sled to have fun sledding down the dunes.
Stop by the Visitor Center in Highway 70/82, 15 miles from Alamogordo, to pick up information on ranger-led hikes.
The eight-mile scenic drive into the monument is also a great way to see the dunes. Enjoy superb accommodations only minutes from the monument in southern New Mexico.
