See one of the most impressive landmarks found in New Mexico. The Chaco Culture National Historical Park located near Nageezi in northwest New Mexico, was the home of the Chacoan people in the middle to late 800s. The homes lasted more than 300 years.

They built multiple story, stone homes including the Pueblo Bonito, Peñasco Blanco, Una Vida, Chetro Ketl, Hungo Pavi and Pueblo Alto. A short nine mile drive provides access to the guided trails of six of these amazing sites.

Consider hiking the 1/4 mile Petroglyph Trail to see the incredible petroglyphs. Ranger-led tours and astronomy programs are also available. Stay close to the park in Bloomfield, 40 miles northwest the park. Enjoy your time in New Mexico and discover its wonderful treasures.

El Vado Lake State Park

Heron Lake State Park

One of New Mexico's top destinations for small boat sailing and salmon fishing, Heron Lake State Park boasts scenic views and excellent summer playground and winter wonderland recreation. Sailors, kayakers, and canoers can venture on undisturbed thanks to a 'no wake' policy and plenty of open water.

Hikers enjoy the 5.5 mile connection to El Vado Lake in the south, alongside wooded terrain and a pedestrian suspension bridge. In the winter, the lake is popular destination for cross country skiing. Open 24 hours daily, the park is located north of Santa Fe and east of Bloomfield in northern New Mexico.

Navajo Lake State Park

Enjoy a day on the lake in New Mexico. Navajo Lake State Park is comprised of three recreation areas along Navajo lake's 250 miles of shoreline. At 15,000 surface acres, this is New Mexico's second largest lake.

Salmon Ruins

Situated on the north bank of the San Juan River, the Salmon Ruins date back to ancient Chacoan tribes as early as 1090 C.E. The ruins were originally built with up to three hundred separate rooms and subsequently rearranged and partitioned further by later occupants such as the Pueblo tribes and later the San Juan people.

Located in the San Juan valley in Bloomfield, New Mexico, outside of Albuquerque, the Salmon Ruins were excavated in the 1970’s.

Since the site’s excavation and preservation projects began in the 1970’s and 1980’s the goals have maintained to protect and preserve the site in order for research and education to be done.

The Salmon Ruins museum is located onsite and provides visitors with a wealth of information regarding the past and present state of the ruins. Salmon Ruins holds a place on both the National Register of Historic Places in addition to the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties.
