Four-Year Institutions in the Land of Enchantment
The state of New Mexico is home to several institutes of higher education, including eight four-year institutions set throughout the Land of Enchantment.
The state’s largest university, the University of New Mexico, is set in Albuquerque – and features more than 35,000 students. Founded in 1889, UNM is a public research university, and is New Mexico’s flagship research institution – with additional campuses in Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, Taos, Los Lunas, and Gallup.
UNM features the New Mexico Lobos athletics department – encompassing 18 varsity teams – with home games at the University Stadium, or Branch Field, and Pit Arena. The 600-acre campus also features four museums: the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the Geology and Meteorite Museums, the Southwest Biology Museum, and the University Art Museum.
The state’s second largest four-year university is New Mexico State University – set in Las Cruces. The 6,000-acre campus – home to more than 18,000 students – includes Branson Hall Library, the Zuhl Library, and the historic Victory Bell. NMSU is also home to the New Mexico State Aggies athletics, and New Mexico's NASA Space Grant Program.
Northern New Mexico encompasses more public universities. Be sure to visit New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, Northern New Mexico College in Espanola, and the Institute of American Indian Arts in the capital city of Santa Fe.
Southern New Mexico is home to additional four-year institutions. Socorro is home to New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, while Portales features the Eastern New Mexico University – just south of Clovis.
